Collection of records of and relating to the Southern Pacific Railroad and lines in Oregon controlled by the company, assembled by the Oregon Historical Society from a variety of sources. The bulk of the collection relates to operations in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest and includes: engineering blueprints for tracks, bridges, locomotives, outbuildings, generic stations and other equipment; construction engineering notebooks of Robert L. Donald; freight tariff books; materials relating to the Oregon and California Railroad, the Oregon Central Railroad, the Northern Pacific Terminal Company, the Oregon, California and Eastern Railway, and the Portland and Willamette Valley Railroad Company; and employee timetables for Southern Pacific and affiliated lines. Oregon and California Railroad materials include minutes of the board of directors, 1870-1919, with materials relating to Henry Villard and Ben Holladay. Records of the Oregon, California and Eastern Railway include minutes of the board of directors. Most of the materials date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Henry Villard was a journalist, railway promoter, and financier. Born in Bavaria, he came to the United States in 1853. He worked as a journalist for a variety of newspapers and was a Civil War correspondent for the New York Herald and New York Tribune . In 1873 Villard became a representative for a group of German bondholders of the Oregon and California Railroad, and his career as a railroad promoter in the Northwest was launched.
